I recently swapped my board and case, moving from Fractal North to Lian Li A3 Asrock Z790 LiveMixer and then to Asrock B760 Steel Legend. A few weeks later, my 14700K began showing instability problems with the latest BIOS, so I returned the CPU because the PC became completely unusable. I purchased a 12700K thinking I could sell the 14700K once it’s back in stock. The problem with the 12700K is that it creates a minor bottleneck with my 4080 Super, causing blue screens and boot loops when using 6000MT/S RAM. Selling the 14700K for £240 is challenging, so I’m unsure if sending the 12700K back for a refund would help or if I should keep the new 14700K and sell the old one at a loss. I’m worried about whether a brand-new 14700K on the latest BIOS might lead to future instability.
It was stable at 6000MT/S for a week, but now it’s unpredictable and often drops to 5600MT/S, requiring adjustments. I ran memtest86 and got a clean pass on 6000MT/S, though Memtest64 and Windows tasks still cause blue screens with XMP enabled.
In theory, the newest BIOS should avoid stability problems with the 14700K. It runs significantly faster than the 12700K. If you were making a choice, I'd pick the 12700K, keep the 14700K, and lower the voltage for extra safety.
Update sad: I was disassembling my PC, removing the CPU cooler to reinstall the 14700K. The Arctics build quality was rough—mounting screws were worn and hard to remove, so I had to apply a lot of force. The pump came out damaged, leaving a big dent on the motherboard. I’m worried it might cause problems now because there’s a deep scratch where traces could be. I only kept the board for a month. I plan to return the 12700K, sell the 14700K, and buy a new board for a second system. I’ll go with a 7800x3d using an Asrock B850 Riptide and Noctua NH-d15s. I’m hoping those boards won’t cause issues.
I still have the 14700K updating the bios that eliminated the first 14700K. Check the latest message for a sad update on the current state. The 12700K causes a bottleneck with the 4080 Super in CPU-heavy games like GTA 5. At high settings, I was around 80% usage, but with 14700K it hit 95-100%. GTA 5 is extremely CPU-intensive.
AMD generally performs better stability compared to Intel's 13th and 14th generation processors.
