They work well together, but my old 3770 and the 2012 motherboard are getting a bit outdated. I’m wondering if upgrading to a Ryzen 5 3600 would help performance or if it’s worth sticking with what I have. I play competitive games, triple-A titles, and CPU-heavy games like CIV6 regularly. What do you think? Thanks for your advice!

Mostly due to upcoming GPUs, but you should consider an upgrade soon. A 3600 would boost performance, especially with more threads. It might not show much in games because of the GPU, though it could help you use the card more effectively. You could tackle the motherboard, memory, and CPU now while planning the GPU upgrade.
Hi, I'm a bit biased toward the 3600 but think it offers solid value. Back when I had the 3770K, upgrading was nearly identical to switching to the 7700K. Unless you really need something much more powerful right now, I’d hold off until you feel the need for a tougher GPU and then see which platform fits better later.
That’s why I’m unsure about what to do right now. I want to upgrade to prevent having to replace everything at once in 2020 or 2021. Upgrading the motherboard, RAM, and CPU would be ideal since the Ryzen 3rd gen is affordable and solid. However, it still costs around $400 on a student budget and offers only about a 3-5% boost for gaming.

but I'm more inclined to just do nothing, since that's what most people suggest unless I really need something new.
