I use a 2K display and have an RTX 3080 with 10GB of VRAM. I'm uncertain if resolution impacts VRAM usage, but I assume it does. The 4000 series is coming soon, and I've heard some lower-end models might also offer 10GB VRAM (just speculation). Are there any games from 2022 that require more than 10GB at full settings? I haven't played any game exceeding around 7GB so far.
Doom remains eternally sharp at 4K resolution, delivering intense ultra-graphics. Generally, most titles perform adequately in 4K with around 10GB of memory, and graphics settings can be reduced slightly if needed.
The outcome hinges on the quality setting. At 1920x1080 it wouldn’t work for any game. At 5987x1080, I play SimRacers and most titles except PC2 consume all my 8GB VRAM on the GTX 1070. With even more demanding setups like triple monitors at 3x 2560x1440, it reaches 11,059,200 pixels—about 1.5 times the resolution of 4K. Linus shared some videos about 8K gaming, noting that only the RTX 3090 could manage its 24GB VRAM.
Watch Dogs Legion in 4K resolution demands significant performance, especially on systems with only 8GB of RAM. At 2K settings, these high-end cards often face challenges maintaining smooth operation.
I've played titles that require 10GB or higher at full resolution and maximum settings. However, I haven't encountered a title that exceeds 10GB for 4K. Most of the games I've tried are from a slightly earlier era, which means there might be newer titles available. Interesting discussion on VRAM consumption: https://www.resetera.com/threads/vram-in...gh.280976/ There are reports from those who looked into VRAM needs during or before the Amperes release, all suggesting 10GB is adequate for 4K. You should be comfortable at 1440p. Someone also posted a broad benchmark comparing VRAM usage about a year ago on guru3D (I think). If you're curious, you might discover more data by searching online. Edit: I was trying to locate the details I mentioned but couldn't. Through many technical reviews on guru3D and techpowerup, the only game needing over 10GB is FarCry6 at 4K. The findings don't perfectly align, but FarCry6 consistently requires more than 10GB with ray tracing at 4K. https://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/fa...ew,10.html https://www.techpowerup.com/review/far-c...nce/4.html Also, Godfall, which advises 12GB VRAM for 4K, falls short of the 10GB mark. https://www.techpowerup.com/review/godfa...sis/4.html
I usually don’t run into problems, but it becomes bothersome when they do. A specific test ran at 2.9fps in 4K native resolution, but it was so close to the limit that switching on DLSS pushed it over 60. The issue will only intensify with the upcoming generation, and I won’t be able to get below 12GB with a 16GB card on high-end chips. That’s another situation I faced before when going up to 4K. I have to adjust settings to prevent FPS from dropping too low.
I once owned a 10GB 3080 graphics card, and some games ran at higher settings but only at 4K resolution. At 1440p it typically dropped to around 1GB, which wasn’t a big problem. Using MSI Afterburner can help display how much VRAM is being used versus what’s reserved.
10gb should work just fine. If you search for bank4buck on YouTube, check his reviews—he shows the VRAM allocation and usage on screen, and most games actually use significantly less than what's allocated.
