I have these parts: G.SKILL Trident Z Neo RGB 32GB DDR4 Desktop RAM Kit 2x 16GB - 3600MHz - CL16 - 1.35V - 16-19-19-39 ASUS ROG STRIX B550-A gaming ATX motherboard (latest BIOS) and an AMD 5800X3D CPU. If I set the BIOS to D.O.C.P mode (XMP), the PC won’t start and I need to reset the CMOS to work normally. The board lists memory support, but I’m unsure how to proceed. Any suggestions?
First I’d replace the RAM modules, since faulty mounts might still allow booting but cause XMP problems. This issue is uncommon on DDR4 boards, though it’s usually rare on DDR3 and DDR5. It should be quick to resolve and worth a try. Next, manually adjust XMP settings to off and enter the required parameters: memory speed at 3600MT/s, timings in tCL-tRCD-tRP-tRAS with identical tRCD values, and voltage at 1.35V. You might also set UCLK to 1:1 and FCLK to 1800MHz, though these aren’t essential. If that doesn’t work, lower the frequency until it boots normally or experiment with different BIOS versions. Various BIOS updates can affect memory overclocking—especially on AMD boards, where outdated training algorithms often fail (I’ve seen CL14 not respond even on compatible kits). If you prefer not to test multiple BIOS versions, set the speed to 3200 and gradually increase until the system stops freezing.
my setup won't send xmp or manual oc with ram voltage at 1.35... that setting is standard, it will work at 1.36v easily... short version: ram on ryzen tends to be tricky! (same issue shows up on other rams across multiple boards...)
On Ryzen it tends to run smoothly once it's up and running. Intel often causes reboot issues and odd behavior. I’ll keep this short: RAM on Ryzen can be quite sensitive!
Interestingly, this resolved the problem! I planned to attempt the simplest fix first, but luckily it worked. Thanks!
