The tape was designed to relieve stress on the CPU die and increase the contact area with the socket. If your configuration is functioning properly, switching to a different tape shouldn't significantly affect performance.

In the past, before heat spreaders existed, we relied on copper spacers to shield the chip. If you need to use tape, opt for Kapton electrical tape—the yellow, clear kind used in electronics. It doesn’t conduct electricity and can withstand high temperatures.

The usual tape could soften, but it wouldn’t necessarily cause instant damage. It would definitely create a big mess.

Thank you is usually a concern for tape safety. You might want to unplug your PC and use Kapton electrical tape, but be aware of the temperature limits—it can affect its performance.

Standard clear tape can withstand temperatures up to 25°C, essentially room temperature. Although it doesn’t melt instantly, prolonged exposure to sufficient heat will eventually cause it to soften. Kapton tape offers extra benefits—it’s non-conductive and can manage some heat transfer. For best results, create a spacer using a thin copper sheet instead of relying solely on tape. Just be careful not to contact any SMD components on the CPU, as they could short out.
