Hey there, after years with my old i7-3770k, I’m finally switching to a new setup. The components should be here tomorrow. The main decision is which operating system to choose. Right now I’m sticking with Windows 10 because 11 isn’t compatible. I recently tested Windows 11 on my laptop for work and must admit it didn’t impress me. Everything feels more about looks than real performance. You see, pop-ups explode every time you launch an app—it’s super frustrating. I’ve been using Outlook for twenty years now; I don’t need to be reminded there’s a search feature, thanks Windows. The interface is clunky and confusing, clearly built more for style than usability. Are there any technical reasons I should consider upgrading to Windows 11? As far as I understand, Windows 10 still gets the newest driver updates, DirectX, Vulkan, and all the essentials for gaming. Am I missing something? Thanks for your help!
Thanks for the input. I anticipate you're setting up with your Ryzen 7800X3D, 7900XTX motherboard, and DDR5-6000 RAM.
There’s no noticeable boost in performance when switching from version 10 to 11 for gaming on my setup. I’m running an AM5 motherboard and sticking with Windows 10.
The key distinctions lie in the scheduler, HDR compatibility, and user interface. For mixed-gen Intel processors, Windows 11 performs better due to fewer scheduling quirks on E cores. With an HDR display, it offers superior calibration tools and Auto HDR features. Beyond these, UI tweaks exist, but you can mimic Windows 10 using utilities like Explorer Patcher if those aren't essential.
7950x3D works fine with either Windows 11 or not, though I haven't tested it on Windows 10. It seems the driver shouldn't be required for any platform, and using CPPC core settings is preferable. I think it was meant for DirectStorage to be exclusive to Windows 11. Rounded corners are nice.
Microsoft confirmed DirectStorage would work on Windows 10. Most games currently support it, so the impact might be limited.
