No clear boost in performance after CPU upgrade.
Hello everyone, I’m testing an i7 4770k on a MSI z87-g45 board with 16GB RAM and a Ryzen 5 5600 with B450M-HDV R4.0 after swapping to the 2070 Super GPU. The goal was a modest upgrade, but I found little change in gameplay across different resolutions. The performance jump seems around 10%, and even at lower settings, the difference is minimal. I also noticed the case fans kept spinning at full speed after the Ryzen upgrade—my old board handled that better. In the BIOS I checked for any settings to control fan speeds, but nothing indicated DC voltage regulation. After a clean Windows 10 install, I’m still unsure why the fans stayed loud. Could you help me understand these issues?
Choosing single channel over dual can significantly impact performance. You can also try overlay software to verify GPU usage while the CPU has room, then adjust settings for better balance. In systems with 7GB used on an 8GB setup, the total demand often exceeds 8GB, causing constant paging.
The overall usage was about 7 GB, recorded while playing with Rivatuner and MSI afterburner. Can you figure out a way to fix the fan noise for future upgrades? The loud fan sounds at full speed were really bothersome, but now with the MSI motherboard it’s much quieter—about ten times less noisy. With the AMD board the fans were quite disruptive.
I mainly use 1440p resolution, which might explain why the improvement is only 10-20%. At 60fps, any further gains are barely noticeable. The upgrade didn’t feel worthwhile given the extra fan noise and the time I’d already spent fixing things before getting new RAM.
Can't determine issues when hardware is missing. The purpose seems unclear now. Possibilities include limited cores in msconfig, outdated BIOS, faulty drivers, or incorrect RAM settings. They simply transition from PWM to voltage regulation. You can still perform tasks like swapping fans, employing adapters (7V, 9V, etc.) to lower fan speeds, or adjusting fan speeds via software. Capping frames at 60 makes higher frame rates unnoticeable, particularly with Vsync enabled.
