It's really tough to guess how the desktop app will perform. The current results are only about 10mm away from mobile benchmarks, which doesn’t show a significant boost. They might have around 15% higher IPC, but it doesn’t translate into much faster execution, so there’s no real gain. That’s not promising.
Indeed, every architecture faces challenges at its inception. Zen had its own set, but it has evolved significantly. If Intel focuses on refining their processors and addressing issues in the mobile lineup rather than depending on questionable marketing tactics, there could be real progress beyond the 14nm generation.
The problem lies in the fact that 14nm isn't bad at all. Intel's decision to limit model segmentation seems cost-effective. If the 9th generation had used this list instead, outcomes would have been vastly different. They might have gained short-term profits but would have faced far less harm to their reputation.
AMD is clearly in the forefront, but I think Intel will manage to reclaim their position. The challenge lies in whether they can maintain it. AMD might secure a solid foothold in the industry, and there’s even a possibility that Qualcomm could step into the spotlight and challenge both companies.
Intel will eventually re-enter the scene and remain there. A major overhaul across numerous areas would be needed to fully shift this direction. AMD still isn't at the forefront, particularly in terms of market share. Their consumer sales are stronger, but Intel doesn’t prioritize that much. AMD leads in growth, while Intel is currently facing a significant setback in its CPU segment. They offer a wide range of products and maintain involvement across various markets. I wouldn’t fear their decline, but I’m concerned they won’t improve from this experience, and we might find ourselves back where we started five years later when they regain dominance only to stagnate again.
