Initially it worked perfectly with FRAPS, but now BF4 keeps crashing whenever I turn on the OSD. This is really confusing!

Rivatuner is compatible with 64-bit applications. The issue you mentioned with BF4 might be due to an older version or configuration, but you can verify performance by running the specified command in the console.

Tested 32-bit mode, it functioned for me. If it doesn't work, use the FPS monitor build and run this command in the console: perfoverlay.drawfps 1

RivaTuner version 6.0 and above can run on 64-bit games. It was originally only for the beta versions of MSI Afterburner but is now available independently. Regarding crashes, the Origin overlay doesn't work well with other overlays such as RivaTuner.

I understand Fraps is compatible with DirectX, so it shouldn't function with BF4. It has performed well with BF4 when using DX. Regarding RivaTuner, I haven't tried it before.

They offer an internal/console option, so why not take advantage of it? It really undermines the original idea, doesn't it? Regarding Fraps, it functioned well in Hardline and uses a similar engine.
