X58 is ahead of its time yet the same principle held true then. You can't install RDIMM memory on a desktop motherboard. ECC memory is an option, though the ECC feature might not function properly. RDIMM sticks will definitely fail to boot. That's why they're inexpensive. They should be used on server motherboards instead.
You recently installed ECC RAM on a ga-x58a-ud3r and found some success. I had existing server RAM and CPUs, and about half of the stick worked while the other half didn’t. It seems feasible on a gigabyte board.
