I usually purchase games, though I sometimes test them out before buying. When I tried AC:Unity prior to purchasing, the game performed poorly and left me disappointed. As a dedicated fan of the series, I’ve finished all the current titles (excluding Unity). I’m tired of the games I already own and am considering buying this one, but I don’t want to spend my money unnecessarily. My main concern is whether the performance has noticeably improved since release so I can feel I’m getting good value for my investment.
I'm really passionate about the AC series and have enjoyed every match since its beginning... unfortunately, Unity has disrupted my enjoyment of the games. Ubisoft has a strong presence on EA and pushes online play aggressively! You can't complete most tasks unless you're playing alongside someone else—like opening chests which requires teamwork (duos, etc.). Some missions are inaccessible without being part of a duo. It's frustrating because, unlike other games, Unity doesn't let you unlock new abilities or skills through points earned from missions (such as group healing). I'm really disappointed with Unity and have removed it... it completely ruined my experience with the series.
They likely pushed online play hard because pirating the game wouldn’t give a good experience—you’d miss out on online features and key activities. What really caught my attention was how the game actually performs; it runs poorly, which isn’t necessarily a sign of improvement.
It's a bit improved with version 1.3, though they claim the upcoming update will resolve all outstanding problems from that perspective. You should be okay purchasing it. I get the piracy issue, but honestly it feels disrespectful that a long-running single-player game requires online play. A solo campaign would have been a better approach compared to what's available now.
It comes down to personal preferences. The game won’t be fully optimized. It’s playable, though. (depends on your setup) Honestly, I’d invest in something else if possible. If you’re serious about Ubisoft titles, wait for the next update. I think the situation is our only chance considering it’s a new engine. On my end, I can hit 60-70 fps on Unity with a 980 overclocked to 1520mhz—though that’s not great. I’d rather spend the money on Unity and pre-order Ground Zeroes instead. Mordor breaks Unity too.
It works great on my system (refer to the note), though the game itself isn’t great in my opinion. I believe the poor performance of the game overshadowed genuine reviews. As a big fan of AC, this is probably the worst one yet—though the repetitive design of AC1 was better for me. The issues mentioned in post 2 are just the beginning; I also disliked many mechanics. Coming from someone who preordered with all the DLC bloopers, wait until it’s on sale for around $10–15... that fix happened last time I played.
