Hello everyone, I have a query I’d like to discuss. I’m unsure if it’s feasible to fit a PCIe 16 expansion card into a slot designed for PCIe 2. The motherboard I’m using is the 'b650e aorus master,' and according to the manual screenshots, the lower PCIe slot matches the width of the PCIe 16 slot but has a different size. If it’s possible, would this cause significant performance issues? It seems to depend on the specific expansion card you’re considering. Thanks in advance for your insights!
It functions this way. When you insert something into that x2 port that supports more lanes, it simply uses the two lanes provided and operates at the speed of those lanes. (For instance, an PCIe x4 SSD will operate at PCIe x2, but still function normally)
Are you currently utilizing the x4 port for another purpose? The x2 slot is intended to function properly with an x4 NVMe card, though it may only deliver reduced speed compared to others have mentioned. Your board isn’t the same as some systems where the lower slot supports only PCIe 3.0; that would significantly hinder an x4 drive’s performance if it’s limited to PCIe 3.0 while it should handle x4 4.0. Unless you’re running heavy tasks like video encoding continuously, the performance change should be negligible.
