I'm reviewing components for a fresh project. Online sources seem mixed about what an F part actually does. It appears to lock the multiplier, stopping CPU core frequency overclocking. K parts allow unlocked multiplier. I’m missing details on memory overclocking—I use XMP profiles. The 13700F lists 5600[MT/s] as the limit, and the 13700K also shows 5600[MT/s]. Yet this model supports DDR5 faster via XMP or manual timing adjustments. Chipset settings shouldn’t change memory speed; the difference between Z790 and H770 is mainly about PCI-E connectivity. Motherboard quality plays a big role in maximum speed due to traces. For example, the Z790 MOBO claims up to DDR5 7600 MT/s, but BIOS options influence what you can actually adjust. Since I don’t overclock, I’d prefer an affordable H77 MOBO instead of a more expensive Z790 with a built-in VRM.

But it will be officially referred to as overclocking, and legally you’d lose your warranty if you do it. Even without XMP support, you can manually set the RAM speed with a slight boost of +0.05 on the voltage. Stay quiet during the return process, and you should be okay. Yes, Intel has completely withdrawn their stance on preventing RAM overclocking except for the Z board, but I’d still choose the B series chipset for better access, enhanced VRM, and overall connectivity.

They completed two-thirds of the task by stepping back from their approach. The Hx10 boards still can't handle memory overclocking. Only boards in the 500 series+ Bx60 and Hx70 lines let you go beyond the CPU's official RAM speed. (Plus, Z series boards have always supported this.) Also, with locked CPUs, you can't switch from one memory speed to another once you hit a certain threshold—so you're stuck with DDR4-3466 effectively. I don’t remember the DDR5 match, but you’ll see reduced performance if you drop to DDR4-3466 afterward.

Manufacturer support means Intel or AMD will assist you if you encounter issues running standards-compliant RAM at that speed. This doesn’t apply to XMP, and I’d assume EXPO would be impacted too. Silicon support refers to what the hardware can actually handle, but the real limit depends on design and circumstances. Remember, the variation in support isn’t exclusive to Intel. Later AMD AM4 processors officially list a maximum of 3200, which you’ll see in their docs, though they claim 3600 is ideal for advanced users. If you hit 3600 and still face problems, help won’t be available.
