New Wifi Setup
New Wifi Setup
I'm having trouble getting my new Wi-Fi connected. I'm currently using Dodo, but I need to switch from Tangerine Telecom. The DSL cable is already plugged into the router. They say fiber optics work in our area and the modem should be compatible with the Netcomm NF-18 Cloud Mesh model. I've confirmed both providers support FTTP, but I'm stuck on signing in to the modem. I've tried all the login details, but one or both are wrong. I've turned the modem on and off, checked the cables, even used a laptop with an Ethernet cable, but it doesn't fit. I'm trying to set it up from the control panel. It seems like I'm missing something. I just switched providers last night. My laptop runs Windows 11 and I'm using Google Chrome. The speed is about 20.21 Mbps with a 43 ping. The modem was purchased from Tangerine Telecom when we got the new Wi-Fi. Please help if you can!
I believe you're located in Australia. I'm hoping any Australians on the forum can offer more tailored guidance. In my region, ISPs provide their own modems or gateways for connections to DSL, coaxial and especially fiber networks. The latter two need specific credentials and setup that only the ISP controls. Thus, we can't use one ISP's device across different networks. However, with my limited knowledge of Australia's setup, it seems you have access to a broad public network where you can choose any ISP you prefer. (Is this similar to the UK setup, @AlexAtkinUK?) If you received the NF-18 via Tangerine, they probably customized the login details, so you'll need to get that from them. You should contact them when you want to end your service anyway.
I reside in Australia and have limited internet knowledge. I reached out to Tangerine, received a reply, and managed to log into my modem's settings. I removed the previous networks and set up a new one, then turned the modem on and off. I'm unsure if this resolved anything or changed anything. The speeds are similar to before. Other devices connected to the internet stayed online without issues. I don't understand why. Restarting the modem might have switched the connection, but I'm not sure. Thank you for your assistance—it means a lot!
If the previous service provider remains active, it’s likely there was an issue during the transition, since having two providers operating simultaneously isn’t typical (though not unheard of). Also, if you’re still relying on a DSL connection, it’s evident they haven’t upgraded to FTTP. I’d confirm with them which specific package they purchased. If it’s fiber, they might need to install a new unit replacing the modem with an optical terminal that translates fiber into Ethernet, possibly requiring direct cabling to your home.
I'm not completely sure about what happened during the switchover. I'm still using a DSL cable to the modem, which is what I assumed. The service is FTTN and my area works with it too. I might need some new wiring. Do you know the process for installing new wiring? Should I contact Dodo? Thank you for your assistance!
FTTN refers to a faster version of DSL, not FTTP. Did your current provider use FTTN? If not, that might clarify the situation. In some regions, like the UK, they modify the underground wiring at street level to connect directly to a node before returning to the main exchange path. This often requires using a different modem or switching from ADSL to VDSL settings if your device supports it. It’s unusual because routing through a node should block previous signals, but some systems only allow voice frequencies to pass through, which can affect performance.
I understand the distinction but it wasn't that big. The prior service didn't use FTTN. I'm not completely clear on the cabling process. When I set up the new network connections, I selected VDSL. Should the same apply to the old connection? Are there any specific Wi-Fi settings I need to adjust? Please let me know if you'd like a picture. Thank you for your assistance!
Did you confirm all the necessary adjustments? It seems the DSL mode might not be the only change needed, especially in the UK where additional settings for PTM and VLANs are required compared to ADSL. Did you review that page? https://support.dodo.com/modem-setup-gui...e-my-modem
The setup seems uncertain despite the telecom company’s claims. You mentioned that when connected to a VDSL card, certain higher frequencies are blocked, which suggests some filtering was applied. It’s possible they didn’t fully complete the transition from exchange-based to local cabinet DSL, possibly leaving those lower ADSL bands open.
