New RTX 4090 models show reduced performance over the past two years.
Hello, I'm trying to understand what's happening with my 4090. A few years back, when I installed the GPU, I ran some tests and got a score that was average compared to other components. Recently, I cleaned the water cooling system and dusted the fans, which helped lower the CPU temperature during gaming. I wanted to verify if the GPU and CPU were performing normally again. To my dismay, both scores dropped significantly, and I'm still puzzling over what's causing it. It seems like the CPU is also affected. I've looked in forums and tried troubleshooting for days without success. I've done several things: cleaned and drained the loop (temperatures were normal), updated the motherboard BIOS, set the GPU to Gaming BIOS, enabled gaming mode, turned off virtualization, used a single monitor, changed RAM from 2 sticks to 4 (no difference), overclocked with higher clock speeds, disabled G-Sync and Afterburner, and ran Memtest86+. Everything passed tests. I've also installed some software and bought a few accessories. My specs are: GPU RTX 4090, Gaming Trio 24GB, CPU 5800X3D, power supply EVGA SuperNOVA 1300W, 2-year-old build, original condition, new motherboard from Micro-Star, Windows 11 64-bit. I'm hoping someone can offer more advice.
Here’s a revised version of your sentence:
This comparison comes from my latest test using an overclocked GPU and under-voltage settings on the CPU. Performance is still in progress!
The temperature variation indicates two possibilities: a better cooler or the CPU handling more load. Have you attempted a fresh OS installation on a backup drive? Or are you using DDU to refresh outdated drivers before upgrading?
Guys, all your questions are covered in the links. Left side shows older stats, right side newer lower numbers. Temperatures and clock speeds look better—unless it's about OS health, background jobs, etc. The exception is OS performance, background tasks, and driver updates. Clean up the system, run only essential apps, use fresh DDU drivers, and avoid any unusual settings.
You have an extra SATA SSD available, so you can proceed with installing a fresh operating system. I'll try it out this evening and share the outcome. I'm counting on it working smoothly, not due to any hardware issues.
Another point to note: Implementing BIOS or microcode updates recently has resolved certain weaknesses, though they might affect CPU speed.
Both CPU and GPU speeds are reduced now. This could be due to OS bloat or the formation of residue on the chip. If you didn’t use distilled water, mineral deposits might have built up, or some organic material could have started to develop. Consider removing the cooling plates and cleaning them with a toothbrush to eliminate any blockages that affect heat transfer.
