I currently use Spectrum Cable internet at 200/11. My pfsense box is connected via the modem I built myself (it’s not perfect). It runs Datto/Zotac AES-NI with 8GB RAM and a 32GB SSD, AMD GX-415GA. It connects to my switch, then all the computers in my house and an AP. Recently, it has gone offline every month. I can’t access its WebGUI, SSH isn’t working, and I can’t even connect a monitor or keyboard. I had to restart it hard. I know restarting is not recommended for PfSense, but I had no other option. I tried unplugging it and checked for damage, but everything seems fine. I’m considering replacing it with a new router and removing this pfsense device from my setup. The Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X 5-Port caught my attention—I don’t need PfSense since I’m not a networking expert. A friend suggested it, so if you have any suggestions, please share.

It's intended for managing and securing wireless networks. You're seeking control over the setup, possibly using APs or broadcasting via a router. For a business environment, consider Ubiquity Home solutions; for Ubiquity needs, explore Mikrotik if you prefer similar capabilities to PF-Sense.

I possess an AP in my living room to extend wireless access throughout the entire floor—phones, tablets, laptops, etc. I initially focused on EdgeRouter since it’s the most affordable and easy to configure. I also considered PfSense as a business solution... (but it’s free for personal or home use)

Pfsense is viewed as a business solution. What type of application is present in your home?

It's my older router, an ASUS RT-N66R running AP mode. It's still working fine so far. Since we don't have a big house, having multiple computers connected wirelessly isn't really necessary. The AP is close enough to each device, making a cluster system unnecessary.

Just a simple way to get DHCP leases working.

I'd need DHCP, port forwarding, and a firewall setup, since I'm planning to host a server soon and run services from it.

Edgerouter is a solid choice. Mikrotik is another viable option. If I had to decide, I’d go for an edge router, though that’s just my brand preference.

Hmm, that sounds confusing. Did you mean to ask something else?

I guess I still believe an edge router is too much, but... I have no idea what I was trying to say by all that.
