New Rig Overclocking i5 8600k
Hello all,
I recently assembled a new rig equipped with an i5 8600k and a cooler master ml240 liquid cooler. This setup is built on an AsRock z370 Extreme4, and this is my initial attempt at overclocking. I was seeking guidance and have been running Prime95 small FFTs for about an hour without any crashes or BSODs.
The configuration is set at 4.8 GHtz at 1.28 volts, operating around 89°C with LLC 2. This temperature feels a bit elevated for my first overclocking experience, but it seems stable so far. I also tried the same settings with an AVX offset of -3, which brought the temperature down to about 83°C.
The high temperature without the AVX offset is something I’m still evaluating. Should I worry about performance impact from enabling the AVX offset?
89c works fine in prime95. The processor only begins throttling at 100c. With normal daily use, you won’t expose the CPU to excessive stress. A small suggestion though—have you considered reducing the LLC? I understand CPUs vary, but my example can handle 4.8 at 1.245 with LLC set to 5 out of 10 (the highest). Also, perform your tests in prime95 version 26.6. AVX isn’t available there, so you won’t need to adjust it and can keep it enabled automatically. This should help the system run cooler.
Your performance is satisfactory to date. Prime will demand more from your CPU than any other program, which is why I don't like it much—it's not typical real-world usage. You won't encounter 89C in any other context, so it's fine if it reaches that level with Prime. I wouldn't recommend keeping your CPU at such high temperatures for extended periods.
I downloaded prime95 v26.6 and successfully achieved a significant overclock with 1.28v llc1 running between 82c and 84c at full load without any avx offset. I tested it for an hour and wanted to know if it’s safe to use llc1 daily, considering I don’t often reach 100% load for long periods.
My i5 8600k operates at 1.230 volt with llc on high (Aorus Gaming 5 mobo) and stays below 80C.
I have an additional setting on llc that is turbo.
With the llc setting, my voltage never exceeds 1.240.
Without it, I need 1.315 volt but experience lower temperatures.
So I prefer a slightly lower voltage with a bit higher temps when using llc in high.
With llc, voltage can rise above the set value, so be aware of that when trying higher voltages.
When I try 1.330 volt with llc high, my voltage can spike to 1.35 and even more when turbo is on.
It’s all about finding the perfect balance for your motherboard/cpu.
My current setting is 4.8 @1.230.
