New RAM operates with a +1CL boost compared to the advertised specifications
Hey everyone, here’s what I’ve been experiencing with my new HyperX HX436C17PB3/16 2x16GB RAM. After resetting the BIOS and moving the RAM to its second profile (DOCP) at 3600Mhz on CL-17-19-19, the OS shows CPU-Z as 18-19-19. That doesn’t match what I expected. When I changed the RAM timing from CL17 to CL16, CPU-Z updated to 16-19-19, which seems correct now. I suspect the issue might be with the memory itself. I’ve tested it under both the latest and previous BIOS versions, and even tried it on another system with Asus Crosshair VIII Hero Wifi. There, the RAM wasn’t detected in the motherboard’s QVL at 3600Mhz, which might explain why it didn’t boot. On my current setup, the RAM only shows up at 2400Mhz (the default). I’ve also used a Gigabyte B450M D3SH in another machine, and it worked fine. Sometimes when I run heavy tasks like Premiere Pro exporting, the system either finishes or restarts due to a BSOD. There are reports of BSODs with various error codes, some pointing to the RAM, though I can’t see them during normal startup. The manufacturer mentioned that if the BIOS sees the RAM at CL17, it doesn’t matter what monitoring tool says. Personally, I’ve been using my old 3x8GB RAM from the same brand—two Savage modules and one Predator—at 3000Mhz with tiden timings and undervolting. It’s been stable for months without any crashes. I’m pretty sure the problem lies with the RAM, possibly due to higher timings being flagged by OS tools. I’m considering sending it in for replacement (RMA). It seems like HyperX support isn’t very helpful right now. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I recall Ryzen had problems with odd-numbered CLs before. Do these issues still exist? Are your RAM modules in the QVL? Also, is your BIOS updated with the latest Agesa codes for better RAM support?
The RAM is installed in QVL, and the BIOS is version 1805 for AMD AM4 AGESA V2 PI 1.2.0.0. I've tested various RAM slots with both modules and single modules, but the Ryzen model still faces issues with inconsistent CL timings. I'm planning to contact RMA in about a week or sooner if needed.
I'll review it later, but I'm confident the module system is set to Gear Down Mode Off. I'll follow up and update you soon.
It might seem simpler to stop at C16, but stability isn't guaranteed there. There could be hidden issues or limitations that aren't obvious at that point.
It remains inconsistent regardless of the default configuration.
Aye @boggy77 & @Tristerin Gear down mode solved the question, and i guess that answers Tristerin's question about Ryzen still having issues with uneven timings. Now, let's see how stable will they be, and if they are - i will try again to tighten the timins or clock the speed (or both) after i get my new PSU. P.S. Apparantly Gear Down Mode is on AUTO by default which acts as ENABLED usually, so ..... i learn something new every day ^^ Thank you guys, you're great!
