I just bought a custom-built PC with an i9-9900K. I'm checking if I can upgrade to newer CPUs without replacing the whole motherboard. Intel is phasing out the 10th generation chips, and it seems they're moving to a larger chipset. I wonder if this will be the trend moving forward or if they'll ever return to a smaller 14nm design (I think the 9th gen was 14nm++ and the 10th was 14nm+++? Not sure). For those who don't care, here are my specs:

This model only supports up to one generation of changes in Intel's design.
Be concerned about it before the upgrade window arrives. Since you replace the system every few years, swapping out the motherboard might be a good idea. The CPU should still serve you well for a while.
It's understandable to feel surprised about needing a new monthboard. The timing of this change might be unexpected.
