New PC performance and overclocking
Hi, I’m just starting out with PC gaming. I built my first computer two days ago. The parts I currently use are:
Asus Prime B350 Plus motherboard
Ryzen 1600 3.2GHz
GeForce GTX 1070 SC
RAM Vengeance DDR4 8GB at 2666MHz.
In the past few days, I’ve been researching PC gaming components and everything, but I’m playing Battlefield 1. I was expecting smooth gameplay at 60 FPS on high or ultra settings when playing online with 64 players. I installed Fraps to monitor FPS and aim for around 99% at 60 FPS, so I’m using most of the settings on medium.
Don’t misunderstand, I’m coming from a console, and that still looks much better than Battlefield 1 on PS4 Pro.
I play at 1440p resolution, and I know 1080p gives me faster performance, but the issue is that I bought an ASUS VPU 4K 60Hz monitor two weeks ago for my PS4 Pro. 1080p doesn’t look as good on that screen, which is why I’m using 1440p.
How’s that performance normal? Or am I doing something wrong?
I installed ROG Cooler Queen Z and it shows a core voltage range of 0.798–0.807. It also displays a core speed of 1546MHz, but my processor is at 3.2GHz—does that indicate a problem? Or is it because I check it when not in a game?
In the BIOS, it shows a clock speed of 3200MHz and DDR4 2133MHz, even though I have 2666MHz. I’ve upgraded the motherboard software to the latest version today.
Does overclocking the CPU from 3.2 to 3.8 help? Is that safe? I only have two fans, but in BIOS it shows the CPU temperature around 30–35°C. I also see videos on how to overclock it.
I’m just not sure what voltage settings I should use for the VRAM. Should I look into the VDDDRC CPU offset voltage?
I’m really happy if someone can explain everything clearly, because I’m still learning.
Search for a fix to my FPS drops. Many people say overclocking in Prime B350 Plus with BIOS has some issues. When I try to overclock to 3.8GHz, the voltage settings seem to change unexpectedly. On YouTube videos, my CPU was showing 1.5GHz during stress tests even though it was running at 3.8GHz. After switching back to the default BIOS and installing Ryzen Master, I finally got better results. My stress test kept the CPU around 3.791-3.794GHz with temperatures between 65-67°C (longer stress tests show improvement). Also, I can run BF1 at high/ultra settings without dropping to 56-58FPS for a short time, and the game runs smoothly and looks great.

First off, your 1070 seems to perform better on higher settings, though it should run smoothly at medium levels.
Your CPU looks fine, but pushing it overclock will really boost its performance.
Performance monitors:
1) When extra power isn't required, the CPU speed drops. If your monitor shows the CPU below 3.2GHz, check your usage—it should be between 30% and about 60%.
A lower core voltage than listed usually means the CPU is slowing down to save energy since it's not being used. At 3.2GHz, it should be around 1.2 or 1.3 volts.
2) Regarding RAM speeds, if you see a discrepancy like 2,666MHz but it displays as 2,133MHz, you might need to adjust the BIOS and enable X.M.P. profiles. This setting automatically optimizes the RAM for maximum speed. It should be straightforward to locate.
Overclocking:
1) Overclocking the CPU is more complex than GPU overclocking, and benefits stop increasing after a point. At 3.2GHz, you can jump to around 3.8GHz, especially with Ryzen processors.
I don’t have a Ryzen CPU myself, but others might be able to assist. Alternatively, check online forums for tips on overclocking your Ryzen CPUs.
2) If your GPU is struggling and limiting performance, you can easily push it further using tools like MSI Afterburner or EVGA Precision X. Let me know if you’re interested in that!
So today I installed Ryzen Master with voltage 1.350 and clock speed 3.8GHz. Now I wonder if it works normally in Windows without using any programs, when the clock speed is lower? My CPU shows 1.5GHz in Windows, but during a stress test it jumps to 3.7-3.8GHz. Is that correct? Or should my CPU speed be around 3.8GHz?
