New PC has only one boot attempt now, but it fails to start with the amber VGA LED on the motherboard.
I just finished assembling my PC. After everything was assembled, I turned it on and reached the BIOS menu. I powered it off, tidied up the workspace, connected my mouse, keyboard, and USB to refresh the BIOS settings, restarted it, and now I see the amber VGA debug LED on the motherboard. All fans start spinning during startup, but the GPU and PSU fans cease after a short time. Seems normal?
Part List:
GIGABYTE Z790 UD AC D5
INTEL I9-13900K
GIGABYTE RTX4080 AERO OC
CORSAIR 32GB VENGEANCE DDR5 6000 C40 BL
SAMSUNG E 2TB 970EVO+NVME M.2 SSD
TOSHIBA 6TB X300 7200RPM 3.5 HDD
CORSAIR RM1000E FM 80+G ATX3 PSU
What I've tried:
- Boot without GPU installed
- Boot with NVME installed
- Boot without HDD plugged in
- Boot with single RAM stick in A2 (tried both sticks)
- Boot with HDMI plugged into motherboard
- Boot with HDMI plugged into GPU
- Cleared CMOS pins for 10 seconds
When I shorted the CMOS_CLR pins, the DRAM lights up briefly before turning off again. Not sure if that’s typical.
I also unseated the battery for 10 seconds and reinserted it.
Checked all PSU cables and confirmed the different PCIe slot.
Still can’t get back to the BIOS. Any ideas on what might be wrong or what I should try next?
Initial Post
Refresh the BIOS without being able to reach it. The manual mentions a button that needs to be enabled in the BIOS settings, but only after powering off and unplugging it.
Learned how to reflash BIOS without accessing it first. The problem wasn't fixed. Now I think I should check if the issue lies with the CPU or motherboard. Is there a way to test that without a dedicated bench?
Updated: The issue is resolved! After swapping the motherboard and CPU, posting remained problematic. For testing purposes, I changed the monitor, which worked perfectly. Uncertain if it was related to the monitor's behavior with VGA checks from the motherboard. Now everything is functioning properly.
