new notebook not functioning, FO4/SSE fails to launch
Hello, this is Deetex.
I just got a fresh laptop to swap out for my old Dell. I picked the Asus TUF FX505DT. It comes with a Ryzen 3750H and Vega 10 graphics, plus a GTX1650m. The main storage is a 512GB Samsung OEM drive, while the secondary storage is a 2TB Seagate drive.
Everything seems to be working smoothly except for Skyrim SE or Fallout 4 not launching properly.
On my desktop setup—roughly equivalent to the notebook I have (1950x, RTX2080Ti, Samsung 970Pro, 8x8GB Corsair 3K RGB)—it runs fine. Steam is installed in the default folder, and the games are on the D: drive.
When I start Steam, it shows the first-run prompt, then tries to launch the game. The splash screen appears but doesn’t open the game.
No processes are running, no EXE files visible, CPU is idle, and Steam says I’m doing nothing.
What I’ve tried so far:
- Checked BIOS and drivers for updates (not needed).
- Verified the game cache files are intact.
- Reinstalled from scratch after deleting and re-downloading.
- Confirmed installation paths match my desktop setup, which supports both games.
- Set the NVIDIA control panel to use GTX instead of Vega.
*Also tried adjusting GPU settings in Windows.*
Fullscreen or windowed modes didn’t help. Thanks for the tips, William!
Have you attempted removing the game, clearing the Skyrim Special Edition directory that remains on your system, restarting the installation, and checking if it resolves the issue? This approach won't erase your saved files, which are stored in a different location within My Documents.
Well... it looks like Asus gave me a poor factory setup. That should have taught me to rely on factory installs instead. I should have followed the advice I learned after more than seven years at Dell.
In my tests, when I ran any game with administrative privileges or in Win7 compatibility mode, I kept seeing errors about a missing DirectX DLL. Attempting to replace that DLL from my desktop led to issues where the app wouldn't launch.
So I removed the HDD and SSD, swapped in a spare SSD, and did a rough fresh install of Windows 10 1903, Steam, and SkyrimSE. It worked fine.
I probably deleted the M.2 SSD and did a full clean install, making sure all necessary drivers were installed but removing any factory bloatware. The game ran smoothly now.
I think this thread might be closed now.
