I recently purchased an HP laptop... The first new PC I've bought in years caught me off guard when I first turned it on. Contana handled the setup, connecting me to the internet, but then I had to stop when it asked for a Microsoft account. I don't want that, and I'm trying to delete the account created during the installation of Windows 10 on my desktop. Microsoft emailed me saying it would keep my account unless I choose to delete it by August 18th, after which it will roll over. Now I feel stuck with this laptop. Is there a way to skip the Microsoft account and finish the setup, or do I need to create an account first and then remove it?

It might have been possible to set up an offline account, but you didn't have to link to a Wi-Fi network or connect via Ethernet cable.

The message describes the surprise of needing to connect to the internet for installing the operating system after a long time without doing so. It questions how to create an account without using the internet.

This could assist (if the MS hasn't resolved the loophole yet):

This situation doesn't apply to the W10 "Home" OS installation. Based on my experience, they have addressed this issue. The only way I'm aware of avoiding entering MS account details is by opting for a "Pro" license.

OP, the simplest approach is to create or activate a new MS account. I won't refer to it as temporary since you'll need it later. Set up your PC and then proceed with steps to use a local-only account. This trend is similar to Apple and Android/Google, but it's unlikely to be feasible in the future.

I need to use it later, so please create an MS account. I read that it's only necessary if you're interested in "Office:" and other areas you're not into. I don't like the constant reminders that it's for sale, etc., I get enough of those from other ads.
