New installation takes longer. It doesn't work with Windows!
Hey everyone, I’ve been checking the forum and found a lot of posts about slow postings, but none that match my setup. I put together a custom system a few months back. The specs are: Mobo model Asus H610M-A with Wi-Fi D4 CPU, i5-12400F, RTX 4060 GPU, 16GB DDR4 RAM at 4000MT/s paired with a 500W PSU from an old machine, plus a few old SSDs and HDDs. I’ve tried everything within my grasp—changed BIOS settings, updated the firmware, unplugged all SATA drives leaving just an M.2 SSD—but nothing works. I’m stuck trying to run Windows 11, which is taking forever to boot from USB and then feels unresponsive after searching for disks. It won’t let me delete partitions or move past that point. Luckily, it works on Ubuntu, but the boot time is still around two minutes. I’m not sure what’s wrong, but I’m not sure where to start next. My guess is the old drives are causing the problem, but now I’m considering PSU or RAM issues. Since I’m not very familiar with Linux, I don’t know where to begin. I was planning to use this mainly for gaming and upgrade drives later, so Windows seemed like the best choice. It’s been sitting unused for about four months because I got tired of seeing it. Any advice would be huge!
I first used only SATA drives. After disconnecting them, I switched to an M.2 drive to confirm the problem wasn’t with the old ones.
I prepared your Windows 11 USB install by following specific guidelines. You needed to satisfy all conditions such as secureboot and TPM 2.0. If any condition failed, it could cause issues. You might have used Rufus to generate the installer and skip those constraints. A successful run indicates one or more requirements weren’t met, so you’d need to either use a different method or fix the settings before reinstalling Windows 11. Good luck!
Check if the system is attempting to start in UEFI format. The alternative MBR or legacy settings aren't supporting Windows 11.
It could be a minor problem. Were you using the identical USB drive for both Windows 11 installations? Switching to a different drive often resolves the issue. USB compatibility with Windows installers can be tricky at times.
So yes, the same problems persist. I thought I’d checked in UEFI mode before, but we can be sure now. I used the identical stick. Unfortunately, I can’t test this right now—getting another USB is necessary since the one I have is outdated and has limited space. The other one is old too. The delayed post time probably points to a bigger system issue, shouldn’t it?
I believe the Windows installer still fits on an 8 GB drive. Buying another stick would be inexpensive and always helpful. A long post time might stem from a bad boot drive, damaged Windows files, a failing CPU, insufficient RAM, or even issues with the motherboard or power supply. The best approach is to check each component individually until you identify the problem.
