New hardware for Windows 11?
Hello, with the upcoming release of Windows 10 nearing its end, I believe it's finally the right moment to switch to Windows 11. But my i5-6600K CPU isn't compatible with the new operating system. I'm looking for some CPU suggestions. Would I also need a replacement motherboard? My existing one is the Z170A GAMING M5. Are there any other upgrades required?
Edit: Specs updated

Monitor: Asus VK278Q
Approximate Purchase Date: Before Windows 10 support ends
Budget Range: Uncertain, depends on the number of new components needed
Usage Priority: From most to least important – browsing the web, watching videos, using office apps, light gaming.
Monitor purchase: No
Upgrade needs: To be decided
OS purchase: Yes
Preferred parts sources: None specified
Location: London, England
Parts preferences: None specified
Overclocking: No
Multiple GPUs: No
Monitor resolution: 1080p
Extra note: I think I'll also consider a new case while making this change. It looks like my current case is in poor condition.
And most importantly, why am I upgrading?
I need components that work with Windows 11.
I’m aiming to retain most of my components, keeping only the CPU and possibly a new motherboard, with a budget not exceeding £200.

This guide is based on the latest information about Windows 11 support for Intel processors.
I recommend preparing your thread with the details provided in this discussion;
*How to Ask for New Build or Upgrade Advice*.
Initially, it's important to acknowledge the proper context—this adaptation comes from the original *How To Ask For New Build Advice* post.
I believe there is a growing number of requests for upgrade guidance both here and on CPU forums, and I think...
the forum community will offer useful recommendations.
You may also wish to include your system's specifications such as:
CPU, cooler, motherboard, RAM, SSD/HDD, GPU, power supply, chassis, operating system, monitor.
Add the age of the PSU along with its make and model.
This will help determine if any components are suitable for recycling.
You should be able to find the i7-12700k at a great price.
It's a solid deal right now.
However, your budget is quite tight.
If you're willing to adjust slightly, the i5-12600k might work better?
Does your CPU cooler come with an LGA 1700 bracket?
If not, you'll need to purchase the bracket separately or buy a new cooler.

I usually follow the suggested choice within a 200# budget. A 7xxx Ryzen would open more possibilities for future upgrades. Rumors suggest the next Ryzen generation (after 9xxx) will still use AM5. The challenge here is needing to source an AM5 CPU, motherboard, and DDR5 within that limit—unlikely to succeed. I’m not sure about the current situation with AM4, but it might be possible to get a 5600 processor, a budget-friendly board, and a compatible RAM setup, even if it won’t be optimal. It could be worth checking the used market for systems with 8th gen Intel or Ryzen desktops. Consider these options:
A520 motherboard
Ryzen 5 5600 – includes cooler (could replace 3600)
G Skill Ripjaws or Silicone Power DDR4 @3200 (or higher if available)
You might fit an NVMe drive using the RAM you already have.
Keep in mind that AM4 CPUs without G skew don’t include built-in graphics.
A B450 motherboard supporting 5600/5700 would serve as an affordable, Windows 11 compatible system enabling the reuse of your existing RAM.
