Yes, it's true, but even in single-player performance it can be poor. I maintain a high frame rate, but I frequently drop frames, fluctuating between 60 and 45 consistently.

He argues that DayZ is extremely poorly optimized for performance. Even a high-end $3000 machine would find it difficult to play it smoothly. However, a system equipped with a GTX 970 and an i5 4460 should handle ARMA just well and most other recent titles without issues. That setup is definitely capable.

It's generally okay for most titles. I'm not referring to alpha or beta builds—these aren't polished and can strain even strong systems. Precisely that's the case with DayZ. It gained traction as a standalone version of a well-known mod. It capitalized on buzz, then faded away. Personally, I've spent around 400 hours in Srandalone and another 600+ in the mod. Just because you encounter problems with DayZ doesn't mean it's tied to Arma engine specifically. Arma 3 is solid and offers plenty of playtime. The only downside is that it might be pricier upfront, with several DLCs adding to the cost. At this point, you likely need them for popular mods or servers.
