Hello everyone, I'm working on setting up a new PC. I have an old Windows 8 installation key that I used to set up Windows 8 on my current machine. About a year ago, Windows 8 was upgraded to Windows 10. If I replace my CPU and motherboard and perform a clean install on the new build, can I use that key to install Windows again? Also, would I be locked into Windows 8 if the upgrade promotion has ended?

I'm also curious about the same question.

It seems the license keys are limited to a single use. I'm not entirely sure because I haven't had to reinstall Windows on any drives before.

Did you access Windows 10 using your Microsoft account? The password is linked to that account, so logging in with the same one on your new device will enable it.

Windows 10 activation options include Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 keys, as well as using a live account during the upgrade. If you lack one, ensure there are records of previous Windows 10 ownership. OEM keys are tied to your original machine, possibly requiring contact with the manufacturer for reactivation. Retail keys can be moved to a new device.

It turns off automatically when you start your original operating system on a new machine.
