New computer, legacy Windows key
New computer, legacy Windows key
Hello everyone, I'm working on setting up a new PC. I have an old Windows 8 installation key that I used to set up Windows 8 on my current machine. About a year ago, Windows 8 was upgraded to Windows 10. If I replace my CPU and motherboard and perform a clean install on the new build, can I use that key to install Windows again? Also, would I be locked into Windows 8 if the upgrade promotion has ended?

Windows 10 activation options include Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 keys, as well as using a live account during the upgrade. If you lack one, ensure there are records of previous Windows 10 ownership. OEM keys are tied to your original machine, possibly requiring contact with the manufacturer for reactivation. Retail keys can be moved to a new device.
