I finally took the decision to assemble my own computer. After numerous tutorials and support from friends, I moved forward. My old machine was only six years old and had trouble running even the latest games. The project was straightforward: I picked a case from China through https://xtia.design/ for their XProto-L model, and they supplied a PCIE Gen 4 Double Reverse Riser cable. I put together my system using the Gigabyte AORUS Z690i DDR5 ULTRA ITX board, 2x16GB ADATA DDR5 4800Mhz memory, and a 2TB Samsung 980 PRO NVME M.2 drive. All components were connected to older parts like a Corsair K65 keyboard (dual USB), a Logitech G602 mouse, a Fostex A4 USB mousepad, and a Dell U2515H sound card (which I intended to upgrade later).
The initial setup felt smooth. I installed Windows 11, verified everything was certified, and updated all drivers. Yet, performance remained inconsistent. I noticed frequent slowdowns—especially when opening YouTube or launching games, which would drop FPS to around 1fps. Random restarts also occurred. After some investigation, I discovered a massive spike in WHEA Logger Event 17 in my Event Viewer logs. This likely pointed to a hardware fault.
I contacted the seller and learned that my motherboard was failing and most components were functioning normally. They couldn’t pinpoint the exact problem but suspected the PCIE Gen 4 Riser cable might be faulty. Since I had no way to test it safely without risking further damage, I decided to return the older board and ordered a replacement ASUS ROG STRIX Z690-I Gaming WiFi ITX motherboard. I rebuilt my system using the same riser cable.
Now everything runs smoothly and efficiently. But I still see Event 17 entries in my logs. If I can’t get another case, what should I try next?
Sure, I've updated it. Let me know if you'd like further adjustments.
