New computer. Games failing unexpectedly with event ID 153.
Hey there! I’m really seeking assistance. Two months back I assembled a new PC. Games tend to freeze, and in the Event Viewer under the System tab, I see two entries with nvlddmkm Event ID 153. There are no error alerts in the Application area. Here’s my setup: CPU: 9800X3D, Motherboard: ASUS Strix X870-F Gaming (BIOS 1303, updated April 13, 2025), RAM: 64GB DDR5 6400MHz ADATA XPG Lancer RGB (AX5U6400C3232G-DCLARWH) – two 32GB kits), GPU: RTX 5080 MSI OC 16GB (RTX 5080 16G VENTUS 3X OC Plus), PSU: FSP Hydro PTM PRO ATX3.0 (PCIe5.0, 1000W), SSD: 1TB Samsung 990 PRO (MZ-V9P1T0BW), SSD: 2TB Samsung 990 PRO (MZ-V9P2T0BW), HDD: 4TB SATA-III WD Gold (WD4003FRYZ), Stable Diffusion installed. I purchased it on January 31, 2025 and used it in an older system. Windows 11 24H2 was installed via the initial image; checksum verified. I disabled integrated graphics and Fast Boot, didn’t use PBO or EXPO, temperatures are normal. I tested various GPU drivers (572.16, 876.80, 576.88) but nothing helped. Disabling NVIDIA HD Audio or skipping driver installs didn’t improve things. I increased TDR delay without success. No PCIe raiser used. I’m playing mainly AC: Valhalla – it crashes after about 30 minutes or 5 hours. Oblivion Remastered also had issues a couple of times. Dead Island ran smoothly for 18 hours straight. Less intense titles like Persona 5 and ZombiU work well. Cyberpunk 2077 crashed once, but I played it sparingly. When using Stable Diffusion, Event ID 153 errors show up in Event Viewer but don’t affect gameplay. They seem to happen during manual checkpoint changes rather than in real-time. I’ve tried different fixes – updated firmware, changed settings, even removed the old HDD – but nothing resolved it. I installed updates regularly (KB5055523, KB5058411, etc.). Currently, my main game is AC: Valhalla. It stutters after half an hour or after five hours. I’ve played less demanding games without problems. When using Stable Diffusion, Cyberpunk 2077 and Horizon: Forbidden West crashed a few times. My monitor has G-Sync, and in NVIDIA 3D settings I enable VSync and set FPS limits. The PC passed Prime95 tests – small FFT, medium FFT for RAM, Vulkan FPS test for 15 minutes. I’m not sure what to try next. I read a big discussion online about possible solutions, but all attempts failed. One theory: the SSD with Windows might be sharing PCIe lanes with the GPU, which could cause issues. Could this be hardware-related or just a software quirk? Another thought: I bought the GPU on January 31, 2025, and used it in an older PC where I also got Event ID 153 with Stable Diffusion. AC: Valhalla sometimes crashed too, but Horizon titles didn’t. Maybe my GPU is faulty? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
The solution is to delete the existing drivers and restart the system. NVIDIA explains further reasons but emphasizes the reinstallation process.
