New Build won't start when I put in a PCI card?
Hey guys, I bought a new computer recently but I'm stuck on this: when I plug in my RME MADI FX PCIe card, it won't turn on. If I press power, the light flashes once, then stops. Nothing else happens. To fix it, I have to take the card out, unplug the power cord for a few seconds, and try again. I tried changing BIOS settings, moving memory, or swapping slots but nothing worked. The RME card is already working fine in another computer. I'm really confused what else to do. My CPU is an AMD Ryzen 5 with 3.8 GHz, and my power supply is a 500-watt unit. Maybe the power supply isn't strong enough because of this new card? But honestly, a 500-watt setup should be plenty for me, even though I don't use the built-in graphics on the motherboard yet. I'm wondering if the PSU is weak and stopping it from turning on. But that doesn't make sense since my other PC works fine with just an onboard card. Who knows what else might be wrong? Before I take everything apart to get a new motherboard, can anyone help me out? Thanks so much!
My CPU is an AMD Ryzen 5 7600 running at 3.8 ghz and my power supply is 500 watts. When I write a post about fixing problems, it's common to tell everyone exactly what machines I have. Please list all your build specs here:
CPU: cooler: Motherboard: RAM: Hard drive or SSD: Graphics card: Power supply: Case: Operating system: Monitor: also tell me how old your power supply is besides the make and model number. Tell me which BIOS version your motherboard has right now. On what slot does this card sit on your board? Moved this thread from the Motherboards section to the Systems section.
I think my computer's BIOS doesn't know which version of the PCI Express on the card I'm using. The RMI WADI EX site says it's a "1-Lane PCI Express Endpoint device" that is running at revision 1.1. You should check your BIOS settings and see if you can stop the slots from doing too fast things. If those slots are set to run at Gen 4 but the card only supports Gen 1.1, they might clash. If you change the slot setting on your BIOS to Gen 2 for that specific connection with the card, it might start up fine.
Thanks, that was a good idea... but the problem is still there. I thought all PCI-e slots would be backwards compatible, so why isn't it working? My whole system is: Windows 11 Home on an AMD Ryzen 5 7600 with 3.8 ghz, running on an Asus B650 Plus Wifi board with a Kingston FURY 32 GB DDR5-6000 Kit and a SAMSUNG 990 PRO 1 TB SSD topped off by Noctua NH-D15. Do you have any other ideas?
I figured out what was wrong: I replaced my old 500-watt power supply with an 850-watt Be Quiet! model, and now the PC starts up fine. That's strange! People say that for this CPU and motherboard combo (no GPU needed), a 500w PSU should be plenty of power.
