Upgraded from an I7-7700 and Z170 Pro gaming Aura to a 12600. Computer runs fine, temps are good. Problem is, when I try to play a game, it causes massive coil whine in the power supply. This did not happen before upgrading, I was able to play the exact same game with no issues. I have found that limiting the GPU power limit in MSI Afterburner or reducing the max fps in the game to 50 fps (down from 144) can make the coil whine go away. Question is, is this realistically a motherboard issue? I have heard a LOT of problems with Gigabyte boards and am wondering if this is another issue they can cause. I have already tried enabling the noise mitigation setting in bios as well as updating the bios and drivers to the most current versions Specs: PSU: Be Quiet Straight Power 11 Gold certified 650w GPU: GTX 1070 CPU: Intel I5 12600 MOBO: Aorus z690 elite ax DDR4

It looks like a PSU problem might be more probable. Which one did you replace?

I thought similarly, but after checking the maximum power consumption on the HW monitor, I realized most power supplies weren't even reaching half their rated wattage.

Additionally, the 12600 draws less energy than my original CPU, which means I adjusted my overall power needs accordingly.

In fact, although the 12600 has a lower TDP, it consumes more power during turbo mode compared to the 7700K. This might explain why your system performance seems better in games. It could also be due to a faulty power supply unit.

Alright, that makes sense. It did seem to draw less power than expected, but it wasn’t close to the turbo range. I noticed the CPU usage stayed around 10-15% while the GPU was at full capacity, and everything ran smoothly without any issues. Based on that, the power draw should still match what my original system was handling, so there’s probably no reason for the PSU to be struggling right now.

I switched to a different power supply, but the sound disappeared. I wasn’t sure if that was a good thing, but it seems better than replacing the motherboard. I still face the buzzing noise from the board, though. They added "Acoustic Noise Mitigation" to the BIOS and turned it on—I think it helps, but the noise isn’t completely gone. I’m not sure how it affects performance technically, so I’m a bit concerned but hopeful it’ll work for now.

Recent update, just a day after use, another power supply encountered the same issue. I used different cables too, so it’s unlikely those are the cause. This isn’t the power supply, and I now have my original one on its way for a return. I also tried swapping the GPU, but it didn’t help. I’m considering checking the motherboard or CPU next. I’m unsure what options remain, since I bought the open-box motherboard from MicroCenter on the 15th of last month, and their 30-day return policy doesn’t cover motherboards.
