Networking beginner, need assistance, slow connections over distance, help required.
I've started purchasing bigger games—each over 50 GB—and now I'm fully aware of the issue. The distance from my router limits my download speed to under 10 Mbps. My AT&T router isn't top-notch, and I’ve heard standard models often struggle with range. I can’t sit near it in the basement because it’s blocked by furniture, and even moving just a few rooms doesn’t help much. In my phone test, I got 50–100 Mbps in a smaller space, but it’s cramped and requires constant adjustments. Should I relocate to a better spot or upgrade to a router with stronger range? If you need details, I’ll send them quickly, though I might not reply right away due to today’s busy schedule.
You can also connect via powerline kits, eliminating the need to run long Ethernet cables through several rooms or floors. For example, you can use kits like the TP-Link PA4010 kit available here: https://www.tp-link.com/us/home-networki...a4010-kit/. While the speed will be slightly lower than a direct Ethernet connection, it offers a more stable alternative to Wi-Fi.
Your phone is handling much faster data than your computer, which suggests the Wi-Fi chip in your device might not be capable of supporting those speeds. The age of the laptop or computer you're considering is important to check, along with its overall specifications and the exact details of the Wi-Fi card it uses.
The computer is 2 months old, with the wifi-card being around a year and a half old. The WIFI Card specs is a PCE-A51 from ASUS. And also, I said the room I had the option of moving too had 50-100mb/s, not the room I'm currently in (with phone in the room I'm currently in I am getting 10 mb/s, same as on my computer.) The System specs are PC: AMD Ryzen 5 5600x, 3600 DDR4 2x8 G.Skill Ripjaws V, Crucial P2 1000 GB, MSI B550-A Pro, Noctua NH-U12s, 2 pack of Arctic PWM PST F12, Phanteks P400a with an RX 560 in place of a 3060 ti until the GPU market clears up or I have close to a chance of getting one half decent.
