Network Switch Issue
Network Switch Issue
I'm experiencing problems with my Netgear 8-port gigabit switch. It powers up normally, lights up when devices connect, but I don't see any IP information from the router or reach my NAS via it. After trying workarounds, everything seems to function correctly. This suggests the switch might be faulty. I opened it to check for shorts or damage and noticed some residue on the board—possibly leftover manufacturing flux. There appears to be an uneven capacitor, which could be a blown one. It might just be residual flux from production.

Everything appears normal at first glance (though that’s not very helpful). The residue looks like leftover flux that hasn’t been removed. The capacitor seems misaligned with the board, which is typical. There are no heat sinks visible, suggesting it might not be one of the premium models with lifetime guarantees. I’d probably try swapping the switch between two units to isolate the problem. It sounds like the switch is likely the culprit—just plug it in and see if it works. The positive side is that replacing the switch should be the most affordable fix.
