Key details: I’m using frontier internet (fiber) with a 500/500mbps connection. The current router is a Netgear Nighthawk X6S (R7960P). All tests were performed on a hard-wired setup. Previously, downloading games took about 45-55MB/s, but now it’s around 20-30MB/s—roughly half the speed. I tried the router that came with Frontier and downloads returned to normal speeds. Still experiencing slow performance. What could be wrong and how should I resolve this? Updated: April 12, 2020 by 6KingSlayer9

Confirming the speed is measured in Mbit/s, not MByte or another unit. Your experience with low speeds from Steam aligns with typical provider performance issues.

I purchased a Netgear NightHawk R8000 when it was brand new, but it dropped wireless speeds by 10-20% right away compared to my previous router that failed completely. After about ten months, I became really frustrated with the slow and unresponsive firmware. Eventually, I had to replace it with an ASUS RT-AC86U and stopped using the old one.

The measurement is expressed in megabits per second. The conversion I’m using is 500 Mbps equals approximately 59.6 MB per second for download speed. Regarding your question, do you mean any other routers besides the one they supplied might be slowing down the connection? Since the provided router functions correctly, it suggests there’s no issue with that device.

Hey, I really wish it stays that way.

Understood, thank you for the explanation. For the purpose here, I'm referring to any source you're using (Valve, Origin, etc.).

I believe it's unlikely. I tested both routers twice, five minutes apart, and the differences seem minimal.

Have you attempted to configure the ISP modem or router in Bridged Mode? Occasionally, using Double NAT might affect performance, though this usually makes sense after a firmware update altered the settings.

What is the brand and model of the device Frontier sends you? Does it transmit a wireless connection? Perform a speed test on DSLReports using your computer connected directly via Ethernet to the Frontier unit. Make sure no other wireless devices are active on the network at that moment. Repeat the test using the Netgear router under identical settings. What outcomes do you observe in each scenario?
