I've recently upgraded my PC and encountered problems with internet speed limits. The issue seems linked to the motherboard—specifically, it fluctuates between 100mbit and 500mbit depending on the situation. On restart, speeds jump up to 500mbit, matching my ISP's maximum. I've tested various cables and set up two PCs on the same network, but only the affected machine shows the cap. The motherboard in use is an AsRock B650 PG Ripley, which has had similar random caps before. No changes to BIOS settings have helped. Any advice on preventing this unpredictable speed limit would be greatly appreciated!

Ethernet uses four twisted pairs, making a total of eight wires. If one pair fails, your 1 gig link will drop to 100 megabits per second. This is why it happens. You might want to swap the patch cable, reconnect, or use a cable tester to confirm full continuity across all four pairs from start to finish. Occasionally the issue isn’t with the patch cable but with the RJ45 connector in the wall. I’ve noticed a loose wire that needed reattachment. Just be cautious not to cut too much—there may not be much cabling left. Still, always use a tester to pinpoint the problem segment. Edited November 16, 2023 by StDragon

Also check for updates. These 2.5GB NICs have several issues. Your latest model uses the Realtek RTL8125BG chip. See the Realtek page for details: https://www.realtek.com/en/component/zoo...s-software. With Windows 11, switch to NetAdapterCx instead of the older NDIS version.

It's not a hardware problem; other cables on this machine work fine, but only this one is causing issues.

I plan to try updating again, but I don’t expect much improvement. A few updates earlier didn’t fix the problem; it stays consistent. I’m stuck at 500Mbps until a sudden 1-second drop occurs, which only becomes obvious during gameplay—like being ejected and then stuck at 100Mbps again. Restarting always brings me back to 500Mbps.

This situation involves the NIC dropping its 1gig link and switching to a 100mbit rate. Review your Windows Event logs for supporting details. Check the Realtek 2.5G NIC documentation—low power mode appears unreliable. Consider using the driver without power-saving features. Reports suggest power saving consumes around 2 watts, which is notable for a controller chip but may not be critical if it affects your connection performance.
