I recently purchased a prebuilt 5070 Ti Z790 MSI motherboard with an I9 14900K processor and a CyberPower PC cooler. My system stays hot, often reaching 99°C during gaming. I checked the cooler placement and thermal paste condition but everything seems normal. I’ve upgraded to a Coolermaster Core II AIO cooler, though I’m unsure if it’s sufficient for my 14900K. I’m not a tech expert and only changed an AIO cooler over two years ago. My CPU runs at a constant 5700MHz, and even without Enhanced Turbo, it hits 96°C while idle. Turning off Enhanced Turbo brings it down to 3200MHz, but the issue persists. I’m wondering if the cooler is the main problem or if other factors need attention.

I don’t have a CPU cooler on me, but I can help you find one if you tell me your system specs or what kind of cooling you need.

Verify the temperatures upon arrival of the new air conditioner and inform us.

14900K is famously tough to chill, needing just a 420mm AIO cooler to really manage heat. Only with a fully unlocked power setting can you get the best performance, though you’ll likely need a solid motherboard—most pre-built systems don’t have that. I’d suggest enabling Power Limit Lock from the BIOS (PL1=PL2 around 125-150W) or lowering the voltage. Unfortunately, unlike AMD, you can’t automate this; it has to be done manually.

Save your profile and then reset the BIOS or clear CMOS. A CPU typically slows down when idle, though some wired OC BIOS configurations might alter this. Also, verify the BIOS version. Intel's 14th generation model has known degradation problems that are partially fixed with a BIOS update.

Will powering down my cpu cause worse performance? or is this just a temporary fix until i get my new cooler in? as of now ive been playing a game for an hour or 2 and my cpu has hit a maximum of 101c.

I also attempted it, but the problem persists at 5700MHz. It seems my BIOS was from around September 2023 or 2024.

From stock 253W a 3% drop would occur. Additionally, you'd experience around 35°C less heat.
