I placed this nogdm3.pref file inside the preferences.d folder using the config "Package: gdm3", Pin: release, Priority: -10. It seems it won’t stop updates to the gdm3 manager in the same way I handled Snap after removing it. My reason for doing this was that I had turned off gdm3 and removed it after installing LightDM, which was very satisfying until a recent update series broke everything. Now I’m stuck with LightDM not working again, can’t get elevated rights, and can’t open Synaptic or even run Synaptic in Wayland mode as before. Everything points to the recent update cycle causing problems with gdm3, LightDM, and Xanmod. I’m currently using Ubuntu 23.10 with Wayland under version 6.6.17-x64v3-xanmod1. Gaming is stable now, but issues remain—LightDM fails to launch without a login, and I can’t get the necessary privileges. I’m considering a fresh install to reset things, but I’m unsure if removing the default Ubuntu kernel and switching to XanMod would fix connectivity, drivers, or WiFi/Ethernet functionality. Any advice on preventing future updates or blocking reinstalls would be helpful.

Synaptic only modifies packages you've already installed. It seems you added lightdm, set it as your preferred display manager, but didn't remove gdm using apt purge gdm3 or eliminate any unused items with apt-get autoremove. Packages will be reinstalled if they're needed by another package during updates.

I realized I hadn't understood the purge process after thinking I'd removed GDM3, and it's possible that skipping this step led to the issues you're experiencing.
