I just noticed that my task manager was showing my ram running at slower speeds, so I checked and xmp was turned off. Does this happen often? I have not been on my BIOS for a long time, and this was the first I've noticed this happen. I did change it in the BIOS, but am curious if this has happened to anyone else.

It might have been consistently off, and you only realized it now. I haven’t heard anything about a self-resetting BIOS before.

A drained CMOS battery can cause issues, though we anticipate more problems than an XMP reset would fix. Another factor might disable it automatically if the BIOS detects memory errors and resets them, but this depends on the hardware design.

CMOS would reinitialize the entire BIOS. The likely cause seems to be an incompatible XMP setting triggering a reset to default configurations. Are you recalling any specific feature or model that mentioned "sensing"? I'm interested in understanding the reasoning and what it actually detects. Generally, memory-related crashes after startup point to either faulty software or deteriorating RAM, which the chipset can't identify without testing like memtest. Updating the BIOS could be a helpful first step.

This feature I tried myself. It doesn't detect issues well and tends to reset things when XMP or Try It mode is active.

When you turned on XMP during PC setup and it’s now off, it’s probably due to a failed boot or some instability that caused the motherboard to disable it. A RAM test would be useful—check both with XMP disabled and enabled. It might also be a faulty BIOS. If you have a newer BIOS version, updating it could help. After upgrading, run RAM tests and monitor XMP in Windows moving forward. Or for extra caution, upgrade the BIOS first, then test RAM, and finally enable XMP.
