The CPU features one PCIe 5.0 x16 port (PCIe2), enabling x16 operation. The chipset includes one PCIe 4.0 x16 slot (PCIe3) for x4 mode and two PCIe 3.0 x1 slots (PCIe1 and PCIe4). There is also a M.2 slot (Key E) compatible with WiFi/BT PCIe modules and Intel’s integrated WiFi/CNVio/CNVio2 chipsets. Because the PCIe 3.0 slots are limited to x4, the physical layout restricts support for higher lane counts even if the port appears wider.

The main concern is whether performance will drop again during data operations. I want to confirm if a 4GB/s constraint is actually being reached.

Certain boards offer two 16-channel lanes or one 16-channel lane combined with four smaller ones (like 1x16 + 1x8), but electrically they run on CPU lanes. You can configure it as two 8-channel setups, such as with the X570 Aorus Pro. Your setup only has a single 16-channel lane and no extra 8-channel channels, so you can't use it for x8 configurations. The drive will function as a standard PCIe 3 on x4 only.

It looks like you're right! Your older motherboard handled 8x and 8x speeds, so I figured the Z790 would work too. Back in the mid-40s, I was just guessing, and now I realize how much I should have looked into the specs more carefully...

Recognizable, for a considerable period all boards featured numerous PCI slots, while chipsets provided increasingly more connections. Just recently, many makers drastically cut back on PCI slots to incorporate M2 modules instead...
