I need to find alternatives for my ASUS Vivobook, which has a broken hinge and isn’t worth the effort to repair. Here are some ideas.
1. What is your budget? I’m aiming for under $1,000.
2. What notebook size am I looking at? 15.6 inches.
3. I’m unsure about the screen resolution but want a clear display.
4. Do you require a portable or desktop replacement? I prefer something light and slim.
5. How much battery life is important? Not certain, but I mostly use it plugged in.
6. Would you like to play games with this laptop? If yes, please list the games and their preferred settings (Low, Medium, High). I don’t play games.
7. Are there other uses for the laptop? Such as photo/video editing or using Libre Office?
8. What storage capacity do you need? At least 512 GB, preferably an SSD.
9. If you have specific sites in mind, please share their links. No particular preferences.
10. How long do you want the laptop to last? I’d like it to outlast my ASUS for about two years.
11. Which optical drive type would you prefer? DVD ROM/Writer or Bluray ROM/Writer? No preference.
12. Please mention your preferred brands and any brands you dislike, along with reasons. I bought an ASUS because a friend recommended them, but the hinge issues are a concern. I’d only consider another if they didn’t have this problem. I really liked how lightweight, slim, and fast it was.
13. Where are you located? USA.
14. Any extra details you should know? I’m not very tech-savvy and don’t know which brands are reliable these days. I need a fast processor; my ASUS has an i5 but I don’t have the specs.

Since you don't require a GPU, an option like this would work well. An 8 core/16 threaded CPU will be quite helpful for your video editing tasks.

Thank you for your reply. However, I'm a bit old and confused — the click led me to an HP laptop at Newegg.

This baby is priced at $800 and supports low to medium graphics gaming when needed.
HP Pavilion Laptop 15-eh0097nr
Windows 10 Home 64
AMD Ryzen™ 7 processor
AMD Radeon™ Graphics
16 GB memory; 512 GB SSD storage
15.6" diagonal FHD display

My son received the R5 3500U for university and research purposes, and he really enjoys it. They run smoothly, the fan rarely turns on, it’s super slim and lightweight, and there’s a touch screen option if desired. It’s a great investment.

I updated AMD’s latest graphics and chipset drivers to enable the Ryzen Balanced Power Plan for quieter performance and extended battery life.

The GPU is typically found in more powerful laptops, especially for gaming and advanced graphics tasks. For your photo editing needs, which aren't very intensive, it's likely not necessary.

Yes, the specialized GPU is designed for this purpose. The laptop includes AMD Vega integrated graphics, which are sufficient for most requirements and can manage basic gaming tasks if needed. Typically, AMD's integrated graphics outperform Intel's.
