I’m new to home networking, so please give me some time. You’re on a fiber plan from Frontier and want a mesh system because the internet in your bedrooms is slow. You’re considering the Amazon Eero 6 and the TP-Link Deco X55, both affordable and well-reviewed. Which one would suit you better? At first look, the Deco X55 seems newer and has more ports, plus it can handle higher speeds if you upgrade later. It also supports Ethernet in multiple rooms. The Eero 6 only has one Ethernet port with two extenders, which limits its use.

You’re using Frontier’s Arris NVG468MQ gateway in the kitchen, connected to the outside via the ONT. You want to know where to place the main router. Amazon’s Eero 6 has just one Ethernet port plus two extenders, while the Deco X55 offers three ports that can act as a router or extender. Do you keep using the gateway, or would you swap it out? If you replace the gateway, the Ethernet cable from the gateway into the ONT should connect to one of the mesh units.

With the Eero 6, you won’t be able to plug Ethernet into a bedroom unit because that port is taken by the gateway. The Deco X55 can serve as a router or extender in any room. You’ll need to adjust your network settings on the router’s page after installation—check the IP addresses and subnet changes.

If you’re looking for a router, it depends on how you want it to work. If you keep the gateway, you might still use it for management but not for internet access. If you install the mesh, you can likely run a separate router or switch for each room. Let me know if you’d like step-by-step guidance on setting this up!
