I kept a Windows 10 installation, may I still reinstall Windows 8.1 using my original license? I haven’t upgraded yet, just reserved the version and have the chance to update later.

I managed to restore version 7, but it returned to version 10 once a virus occurred.

Upgrading gives you an extra month to revert to your previous W8.1 setup. This feature is available in W10 as a backup option. When you upgrade, it saves a snapshot of your 8.1 OS for a month, and you can restore it anytime if needed. W10 automatically handles the restoration process and manages the save itself.
