Consider installing the gnome environment and updating the window manager settings to use gnome instead of unity. Dependencies will indicate any issues during installation, with some problems potentially being resolved and others not.

You can add gnome-desktop by executing the command sudo apt-get install ubuntu-gnome-desktop gdm in the terminal or utilize the package manager to locate gnome desktop.

this will set up the standard gnome desktop, not the altered version from ubuntu 17.10 with the extra keyboard LED. I've tried various methods, but it still doesn't power on. It functions properly on 16.04.

I'll try it, don't worry about breaking anything. I use a CM Storm devastator kit (it's not expensive) and I often switch it on with 'xset led 3' either by hand or in a script I created.

Ubuntu 17.10 relies on a customized Dash-to-Dock extension. The system needs its own release because updates to GNOME can cause issues, yet they have integrated the necessary changes for Dash-to-Dock.
