ChromeOS can be used as a lightweight version of a Chromebook, focusing mainly on web-based tasks.
Hey team, I’m trying to recall the laptop details but can’t find them right now since it’s far away. I don’t want to push Win11 onto something that might not work well. Microsoft seems to have trouble installing on older systems, which could be a big issue for me. I’m not very comfortable with Windows settings, just knowing how to power it on and off and use a browser. I’m hoping there’s a lightweight distro that fits my situation and reduces the need for tech help.
I set up Fedora 41 Workstation for three users recently, matching your requirements. Added all necessary media codecs, enabled the Dash to Dock GNOME extension for convenience, and installed UBlockOrigin for the web browser. Everything is functioning smoothly.
Mint and Peppermint distributions closely resemble Windows. The version I’m using (Peppermint 10) works well for transitioning to Linux. For the newest release, opt for Peppermint 11.
It could have worked, but the last time I checked it only supported a few devices. For someone not familiar with tech, I’d suggest getting the most support possible. You shouldn’t skip that; I personally don’t back it. When I was using it, updates were only available if you installed them yourself. That’s how things work. Also, it’s cool how Bad Apple can run on many systems—lol. I believe former Windows users adapt more easily because they’re used to Windows. For those who aren’t, it’s simpler since their environment is different. I might be biased here; my parents are super tech-savvy, but I know people who just use Ubuntu without caring much.
Linux Mint paired with Cinnamon desktop. During setup, there’s a small slot for password confirmation that you can check to enable automatic start without entering one. When doing so, ensure the password setting in Screensaver is disabled in System Settings. Add "ublock origin" to your Firefox configuration. Enable automatic updates. Does your machine use a hard disk or an SSD? If it’s the former, consider swapping it for an SSD to significantly speed up boot times. The contents from the removed drive can be transferred via a SATA-to-USB cable. These steps have been applied to more than 50 laptops.
I've also enjoyed restoring older laptops using Linux Mint, especially for those who aren't familiar with Windows. The interface is comparable and easy to navigate for basic tasks like browsing, emails, and word processing. With the right tools, simple fixes such as blowing out the fan with compressed air and replacing thermal paste can yield unexpected improvements.
