Need help setting up a new gaming rig?
Hi, I just shared another concern I had, but after trying to fix it, I'm still unsure about my PC's condition. It's an i7 9700k with 32gb RAM and a 3200mhz processor, running on an Asus Maximus XI Hero.
I've overclocked the CPU to 5ghz, and temperatures have stayed under 80°C during stress tests. For gaming, I never go below 70% CPU usage. However, when trying to play GTA 5 last night, the performance was quite unstable. The game runs at around 130 to 150fps at 1440p resolution, but in-game settings indicate minimal VRAM usage and about 70% CPU load. Occasionally it stutters heavily.
Could this be related to my overclocking? I'm not sure if I did anything wrong. On Cinebench R15 it scored around 1600, which seems low for such a high overclock. Any advice would be really appreciated. Thanks! I'm still getting familiar with all this stuff.
1600 in cb15 represents a typical performance at 5ghz. A brief online search revealed a 5.2@1689 with an OC score between the low and mid 1500s. It doesn’t sound like 1600 is problematic.
Regarding potential OC concerns, consider reverting to the factory settings and rerunning the same tests. Keep your current OC profile in mind for a smooth return.
In GTA, what you’re observing with low VRAM usage at very high resolutions might be around 5 GB, possibly closer to 6 GB. Focus on overall core utilization rather than just CPU usage. It’s likely that a few cores are nearing their limits. Also, confirm whether the game is installed on an SSD or HDD—this could explain occasional stutters if it’s on an HDD.
EDIT: For context, a 7700 non-K/2080 model typically hits 1440p max with 1440p settings. CPU usage stays around 50% lower than average, GPU usage is near 90% of capacity, and FPS averages about 100 with 16 GB of 3000MHz RAM. No stutters were noticed. This setup runs smoothly on an SSD. I’ll check the VRAM usage once it’s loaded.
Thanks for the update, I've noticed that GTA5 tends to search for music on the PC, which can cause stuttering. I plan to disable that feature and check the results. Also, I didn't realize I had everything set to maximum except Vsync is off—my FPS drops to around 170 but it stutters a lot, while with Vsync enabled it runs better though not very well. My GPU performance is usually high in other games, but this one stays around 50% and that might be why it doesn't push the GPU too much.
