I dislike GNOME, UNITY (thank goodness it's gone) and KDE. I prefer simple installations. My current laptop is powerful—i5 4300U, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD—but it runs much smoother with this kind of setup. I’m more efficient using the WMI than anything else. Even my old Dell works fine on a similar configuration: Pentium 3 1 GHz, 256 MB RAM, 40 GB HDD, 8 MB GPU. Now imagine GNOME on that machine? It would be a real pain.
