Need help! Download speeds drop significantly when other programs are running.
Hey everyone. My internet connection is currently 500 Mbps down, 20 Mbps up with Spectrum. I'm using an older Netgear Gigabit router running DD-WRT, and it's hardwired. I've noticed that when I'm downloading from Steam or Origin, the speed remains high, but when Chrome is open (even without any activity) or when I access files on my NAS, my download speeds drop significantly—sometimes by half. To get the best performance, I close everything except the download program. Task Manager shows a steady 500 Mbps down plus a little fluctuation, but when I open Chrome, Explorer, or anything network-related, it drops to around 200 Mbps up and ±100 Mbps down. Only when I'm using just half of the connection (50%) does it work at full speed. My system runs an i7-5820K on an ASUS X99 Pro motherboard with Gigabit NIC, 32GB RAM, and Windows 10. Is there a Windows setting that prevents other programs from throttling the network? How can I fix this so I can download at full speed without drops during browsing or file access?
