My family is searching for a new router and modem. We're a busy household with multiple devices—two consoles, two PCs, and many handheld gadgets. We need something reliable to handle all of them. Our ISP is Comcast. Appreciate your advice!

There are two PS4 consoles, two PCs (one dedicated to gaming), four iPhones, two iPads, and a laptop. We aim to spend no more than $500 total for a modem and router, preferably buying them separately since we previously had issues with a bundled combo.

When purchasing a modem today, opting for one that backs DOCSIS 3.0 and 3.1 will maximize its performance. I've been using this Motorola model for nearly a year now, and it's performed reliably with my 250/10 service. https://www.amazon.com/Motorola-MB8600-A...B0723599RQ

This unit is perfect for expanding your network, especially for the router or access point section. It covers everything you need for that part of your setup.

Router perspective: I installed a TP Link Archer C7 and it felt like a solid budget option. Right now I’m using the Synology RT2600AC, which is quite powerful for around $200. From a router standpoint, AC wireless is recommended. On the modem side, Docsis 3.0 models like the CM600 and SB6183 are excellent picks. Comcast also supports Docsis 3.1, offering Gigabit speeds—though you might find a Docsis 3.1 unit for $150–$200. They can handle both Gigabit and 3.0 speeds. Avoid the SB6190 and any modems with Intel Puma 6 chipsets, as they’re known to be faulty. Skip 4x4 and 8x4 Docsis 3.0 devices since Comcast appears to be phasing them out soon. More channels help, even on slower tiers.

Thanks for your support. I've been following Linus since October of last year and didn't realize just how valuable his forum was.

Please share more details about your home. Let me know the size of the house, how many levels it has (excluding the basement), whether you have a basement and if so, whether you require internet there. Also mention if you have a garage and if you need WiFi in it. Specify the type of walls—standard drywall or something else like concrete.
