I have a Lenovo Think Centre with an I5 6400 and 8GB RAM. I'm planning to replace the CPU with a new one in a different case, using a new PCIe card and an RX 570 8GB. My concern is whether the I5 6400 is outdated and LGA1151 only supports CPUs from generations 6 and 7. I found a used Z270 Mobo for 50 euros, but what do you think? Maybe it's better to opt for an AM4 instead, though I'm not sure.
I have a Lenovo Think Centre unit. From this line we can confirm it's a prebuilt Lenovo model from their Thinkcenter line, but we need to identify the SKU and form factor to determine the motherboard type and whether a transplant would be worthwhile. Your processor is fixed, so you won't gain any benefit from changing it on the processor side, though you could still try overclocking the RAM—which isn't really practical for this platform in 2024. If this was when the processor was released, it might have made more sense. Apart from a RAM overclock on the Z series chipset, transplanting would be a waste of money honestly, and the funds would be better invested in a new build.
You might consider using AM4, a 12th generation Intel processor with an DDR4 board, utilizing existing RAM and storage, for the moment. Upgrading later could be more cost-effective. Restoring your setup with an i5 6400 would not be a good use of money at this time.
In the end I made my PC look clunky, but it actually works better. I had a mining rig in my closet and built a case for an RX 570 and PCIe, so my GPU is connected in my PC. I know the riser will limit bandwidth for the PCIe, but it still works fine for me. I didn’t lose much performance, and I’m planning to upgrade to an AM4 board later.
